2024 Acton Artist in Residency to Sing at ACC

We are delighted to welcome Chichi Enu to worship on Sunday, June 9th!

Chichi Enu is an inspirational speaker, classical crossover singer, songwriter, and non-practicing attorney dedicated to helping people trust their inner guidance and shine their light. Her journey exemplifies her message.

Chichi was drawn to speaking, acting, and singing in her youth, but fear and self-doubt led her to pursue a traditional career while engaging in her art part-time. After graduating from Vassar College, she attended Georgetown University Law Center and became licensed to practice law in California and the District of Columbia.

Nevertheless, Chichi performed locally and internationally, including a major concert in Nigeria, singing in Austria and Italy, and appearing as a soloist at various U.S. venues, including the Nigerian Embassy in Washington, DC. She was featured on WPFW radio and performed in operas, operettas, and musicals, most recently as the Marquise de la Mancha in The Queen’s Lace Handkerchief with the Victorian Lyric Opera Company. She also completed a second bachelor’s degree in Vocal Performance at the University of Maryland School of Music, graduating with honors and receiving the Charlotte W. Newcombe Scholarship.

Despite her accomplishments, Chichi knew something was missing. A mental health crisis and burnout in her mid-forties was the catalyst for realigning with her true self, embracing self-compassion, and deepening her spirituality. This inner transformation led to a major career breakthrough: a 2024 Artist in Residency in Acton, MA, including a Keynote Concert, Untold Stories, showcasing works by BIPOC and LGBTQ+ composers and artists. A Little Information About the Songs Chichi will Sing

Chichi has kindly provided us with some musical background on the songs she has selected. In her first song, the text of “Prayer” written by H. Leslie Adams (1932-2024), an African-American composer, is from a poem by famed African-American poet, novelist, and playwright Langston Hughes. 

Her second song, “I Want Jesus to Walk with Me,” is a traditional Negro spiritual. The version Chichi is performing is a personal interpretation, inspired by African-American composer Moses Hogan's (1957-2003) arrangement of the spiritual for choir and soloist.

Chichi’s final song. “Ride Up In the Chariot,” is a bluesy, gospel-style version of another Negro spiritual. It was arranged by African-American pianist, orchestrator, Broadway conductor, and music director, Joseph Joubert (b. 1954). It is a joyful song and one of Chichi’s favorite pieces to sing.

More Great Music on Confirmation Sunday

We are blessed to have even more spectacular music on Confirmation Sunday!  Our own ACC Bell Choir will be performing as well as our sensational Senior Choir.  Our talented organist and Coordinator of Music, Liz Carley, will be playing the organ for the prelude and accompanying Chichi on the piano.  Arrive early at 9:20 am to hear Liz play a selection of her favorite great hymns of faith.
